Chapter Fourteen

What was I thinking?

Tempest mentally chastised herself as she walked the final two blocks to the FBI branch office. She’d asked Nash to drop her off a quarter mile from her destination so no one would see him or his van, although she’d deliberately refrained from telling Agent Jensen she’d be arriving at eight o’clock sharp. If he was busy, she’d wait.

Kicking a loose piece of concrete at the edge of the curb, she scowled at a car that drove too fast through a puddle and splashed her pants. An hour ago, she’d climbed out of the van into a light drizzle of rain under a sky as gray as her mood.

The problem was, she hadn’t been thinking. She’d let her emotions override her common sense, and now she was in the exact position she’d dreaded most—in love with Nash and doomed to be hurt when he headed off across the globe on his next mission to photograph a natural disaster, or a war, or people simply living their lives in some remote jungle.

A long sigh escaped as she picked up her pace. Yes, he had feelings for her. She didn’t doubt for a moment that he cared deeply. But he also loved his work, and as he’d pointed out on more than one occasion, he was rarely home. Which made him a bad risk when it came to having a meaningful relationship. Loving a guy she’d only see a handful of days at a time wasn’t what she wanted or needed to ensure her future happiness.

After walking through the parking area next to the unimpressive building housing FBI headquarters, she pulled open the door, cleared security, and approached the front counter.

A woman behind a glass partition smiled at her. “May I help you?”

She held up her badge and ID. “I’m Special Agent Tempest English here to see Agent Jensen.”

“Is he expecting you?”

“He knows I planned to stop by this morning. If he’s busy—”

The agent already had the phone in her hand, spoke a few words, and set it down again. “He’ll be out shortly.”

“Great. Thanks.”

Tempest walked over to stare out the window at the dreary day as the rain began to fall again. She hadn’t waited more than a minute when the interior door opened and the older agent she and Moose had worked with previously approached.

She shook the hand he offered. “It’s good to see you again, Agent Jensen.”

He nodded in response. “Likewise. I hear you’re staking out the assisted living center. Is there any way I can be of assistance?”

“Honestly, I don’t expect our shooter to show up. I don’t think anyone does. The brass is just covering all their bases.”

He grimaced. “Sounds like a boring detail. I can stop by if you need a break.”

“Nope. I’m all set. I just wanted to let you know I’m in town. If Calvin Stokes actually does try to sneak in to see his grandmother, I’ll contact you immediately for backup.”

His hazel eyes were assessing as he met her gaze.
